1 Fitzgerald and McCain investigation show zero cyber intrusion possibilities
1
The preliminary investigation into the collision of the USS Fitzgerald, which resulted in the loss of seven Sailors and caused millions of dollars worth of damage, has wrapped up. At this time, zero evidence of cyber attack or intrusion has been found. Navy Admiral John Richardson originally tweeted that "there may have been indications of cyber intrusion", however the Navy is still looking into all possibilities.
Richardson went on to say during a live-streamed all-hands call via Facebook that "an amazing amount of attention" was being devoted to the investigations into the Fitzgerald and McCain collisions. Again, no evidence has surfaced to corroborate these statements.
This is the world that we are currently in ladies and gentlemen. No longer are the far-fetched schemes of James Bond henchmen relegated to the silver screen. They are now a possibility. With our lives becoming more and more entwined with technology, the ever growing threat of cyber attack is very real. The topic has been breached and it is now time to take off the blinders and see things for what they really are.

Having served for 20 years, I can attest that cyber
awareness is emphasized early and often in our careers. However, it is this constant “nagging” effect
that makes service member desensitized to the possibility of threats or
intrusion detection. Everyone just wants
to get it done. As a matter of fact,
helpful tips and tricks come out of the wood work on how to “click through” as
quickly as possible to complete the training.
And even when there are videos that must be watched from start to
finish, they get played in the background on mute until it’s time to skip to
the next one. I know because I’ve been
guilty of it myself. Sadly, there is no
one right solution to bring awareness to this problem. Even the best of instructors have a hard time
making this an interesting subject from which to teach and impart wisdom. However, I am confident that in the future,
better training methods will arise and make this less of a chore to do.
